who we are?

History of NASSEJ

The National Association of Somali Science and Environmental Journalists (NASSEJ) were established 05th October, 2009 as a media NGO. The new organization was part of Somali Journalists’ Rights Agency (SOJRA) founded in November 01, 2007, and now became two separate organization but partnership.

The members of NASSEJ are professionals whose mission is to tell the world about science, environment, health, and agriculture they are the current journalists and media professionals including reporters, editors, and producers working for all media outlets in the country such as TV’s, Radios, newspapers and the online media” websites” as well as health workers, authors and university students.

NASSEJ would like to underline how important is having a better environmental health and peace in the mission for democracy in Somalia and NASSEJ members believe that without a stable government in power, something little can be achieved about the environment.

NASSEJ was created and is directed by our member individuals and we are a democratic association and our power comes from the contribution and engagement of all our members. Since then NASSEJ has grown as many Somali journalists and media practitioners have joined and it became a recognized body within the media structure that operates in Somalia.

Our vision

Somalia to be a leading of international standard protected environment that is protected by its people.

Our mission

To improve the level of environment destruction in the country by making a widespread awareness campaign against the environment destruction.

To train and strengthening the capacity of journalists reporting about the environment, health, agriculture and Science issues in the country.

To give training workshops to government agencies and the communities involved the environment destruction and also preparing programs which are given tips on the important of the environment to the citizens through printed and electronic media.

Our objectives

To initiate and expand the public awareness about environmental conservation and mainstreaming Science and environmental journalism in Somalia.

To increase use of information resources, training, and educational events that are already available to journalists and editors who may be covering the environment, science, health and agriculture and to take part in activities of national and international professional Media and Science, health, agriculture as well as Environmental Networks/Unions.

To promote the rights of female Science, health, agriculture and environmental journalists and not to discriminate them in the media, and to guarantee their appearance in all structures of the association.

To encourage addition or expansion of environmental, health, agriculture and science reporting positions within broadcast, print, and internet news organizations and organize seminars, workshops, study tours and discussions.

Promote co-ordination, information sharing and research to contribute to the alleviation of human suffering and the equitable and sustainable development of Somali society.

Represent of our members at international, Regional and local levels.

NASSEJ is funded solely by contributions from individuals, companies, universities, media companies and foundations.

The National Association of Somali Science and Environmental Journalists (NASSEJ) adopts a non-discriminatory policy, that does not consider Gender, Religion, Sexual tendencies, Disability and Age.

Our International Affiliations

NASSEJ is a member of International Federation of Environmental Journalists (IFEJ), Global Network of Civil Society Organization for Disaster Reduction, Arab Science Journalists Association (ASJA) The Horn of Africa Media for Environment, Science, Health and Agricultural Network, (HAMESHAN) and Environmental Media Alliance Worldwide is the Global ej-Forum on World Environmental Journalists an reaching 4754 EJ professionals over 174 countries.
